The GREATEST Little Art Show in E17. I agreed to take part in this fundraiser for The Mill E17. The brief: a blank postcard to create a miniature master piece. After considering the idea of a masterpiece, I recalled my favourites and researched others that perhaps aren't but which might make a good starting point. One painting which falls into the former category is The Snail by Henri Matisse, which I remember seeing at Tate Britain when I was very young. It left a big impression on me. I thought it might be nice to play around with scale and reverse the the idea of a very small creature being represented so large by representing a large animal on a small space i.e. the postcard.

sleeve purchased
I queued up at Somerset House to buy a Secret 7" sleeve. Out of the four I wanted, only this one was left which was actually my favourite. So even more happy to discover that this sleeve was the work of the excellent Nick White - result!
revealed
It's the final day of the Secret 7" show when the sleeve designs are made available for sale at £50 each. All the money raised goes to charity, this year the charity is Nordoff Robbins, who are dedicated to transforming livees of vulnerable children and adults through music therapy. It also means that I can reveal my winning entry for Digital Witness by St. Vincent

pushing the envelope
The 6th May 2015 sees the 175th anniversary of the fist ever postage stamp - The Penny Black - to mark the occasion, Hereford College of Arts, House of Illustration and The Hay Literary Festival are hosting a touring exhibition for which I have been kindly asked to contribute by decorating an envelope. What a great brief!
After much thought and eventually arriving at a simple concept, this is my working process to realise what I had in my head. I painted maybe 100 penny stamps using a mixture of acrylic and Dr. Martin's water colour inks. Cut out the individual (borderless) stamps drew round them in light pencil onto the envelope and painted in the white perforated borders making sure the space and the stamp were numbered. Once the borders were completed, I simply glued on the corresponding stamp to the space.
